The car's futuristic canopy door, engine cover, and highly stylized wheel fairings were removed for the drive, making the V12 powered car a sight to behold. Even when standing still, though, the 512S Modulo still manages to look like it came from 50 years in the future rather than 50 years in the past.

The 512 M (the M stands for modified) is a direct descendant of the 512 S. As a result of race experience, Ferrari's engineers brought in more powerful rear disc brakes and new suspension. The lighter, more powerful engine was also given new, higher efficiency cylinder heads while retaining the 512 S's four valve per cylinder architecture.

The fiberglass body's round shape was reminiscent of the 312 it replaced. At its debut, the package weighed 880 kg, which was substantially more than its more powerful, air-cooled rival from Stuttgart. Poor weather dogged the new 512 S' testing all through the winter, with the team rarely finding a dry piece of track.

At the time, the 612 power unit was the closest thing Ferrari had to the engine that was being developed for the 1970 512 S. At 6.2-litres, the 612 engine was Ferrari's largest yet. It was an all-alloy 60° V12 with dry-sump lubrication, dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder and Lucas fuel-injection.

Chassis 1002 was a 1970 Ferrari 512 S Spyder originally painted yellow with a green stripe. It was sold to Spanish industrialist, Jose Maria Juncadella, whose wealthy Catalan family were owners of a major textile concern. Juncadella was also a highly rated gentleman driver; prior to the Ferrari he had owned and raced a Ford GT40 and Porsche 908/02.
